Development and Renewal of First Aid Training in Degree and Continuing Education at Tartu Health Care College (SekMo)

Aim of the project: 

To enhance the teaching and curricula of first aid and resuscitation at Tartu Applied Health Sciences University, based on analyzed data on the knowledge of Estonian residents and evidence-based recommendations for basic life support in cases of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. The results will enable the improvement of community-targeted training to increase public readiness to provide assistance and intervene in critical situations. Additionally, a proposal will be made to establish nationwide general requirements for basic life support training. 

Project outcomes: 

Applied research will be conducted, and scientific and evidence-based publications will be published on topics that support the development of Tartu Health Care College’s curricula and services: 

  1. Techniques of basic life support applied by bystanders in cases of out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest in Estonia from 2014 to 2024 and their effectiveness according to healthcare professionals: a retrospective study. 
  2. Awareness of Estonian residents regarding basic life support techniques and their self-assessed readiness to apply them, along with influencing factors: a quantitative-qualitative study.
  3. The impact of first aid training on the acquisition of knowledge related to basic life support and factors influencing participation in first aid training among Estonian residents.
