A study conducted by Emor among Estonian residents aged 15–60 revealed that the most reputable universities of applied sciences in Estonia are the Estonian Aviation Academy and Tartu Applied Health Sciences University (TARTUH). In the overall reputation ranking of all Estonian higher education institutions, they share third to fifth place together with the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, following the University of Tartu and Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech).
According to the study, 54% of respondents consider the reputation of Tartu Applied Health Sciences University to be excellent or good, while 52% rate the Estonian Aviation Academy similarly. Both institutions are increasingly associated, year by year, with providing high-quality, practice-oriented education that ensures clear career pathways. Respondents also consider the diplomas awarded by both institutions to be valued in the labour market. In the case of Tartu Applied Health Sciences University, the reliability of the education provided and its overall strong reputation in society are highlighted in particular.
“We are pleased that the reputation of the Estonian Aviation Academy continues to be highly valued. This confirms that practice-oriented aviation education closely connected to the sector is appreciated in Estonia and that the skills of our graduates are valued in the labour market,” said Koit Kaskel, Rector of the Estonian Aviation Academy.
“This is a recognition of our staff, students, alumni and partners. Although the largest universities in Estonia often receive the most visibility, it is genuinely gratifying to see that a strong reputation is not built on size, but on quality, trust and real impact on society and people’s lives. In health education, this primarily means that our graduates contribute every day to creating safety, care and a sense of security,” said Ulla Preeden, Rector of TARTUH.
The aim of the study was to assess the reputation of universities of applied sciences and applied higher education in Estonia among the population. In addition, the general perception of different fields of study within applied higher education was examined. When compared to academic higher education, nearly 50% of Estonian residents aged 15–60 consider the reputation of applied higher education to be excellent, very good or good. The most popular fields of study taught at universities of applied sciences, showing significant growth, are health and medicine (32%), engineering and technology (31%), and information and communication technologies (ICT), which has maintained a leading position for several years (25%).
The online survey was conducted from 13 January to 2 February and included 1,126 Estonian residents aged 15–60. This was the third time the reputation of universities of applied sciences has been studied; previous surveys were conducted in 2024 and 2022. In 2024, the most reputable institutions were also TARTUH and the Estonian Aviation Academy, while in 2022 the highest reputation was attributed to TARTUH.
